Modeling Seismic Recordings of High‐Frequency Guided Infrasound on Mars
نویسندگان
چکیده
NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) mission records several high-frequency (>0.5 Hz) dispersive seismic signals on Mars. These are due to the acoustic-to-seismic coupling of infrasound generated by entry impact meteorites. This dispersion property is propagating in a structured atmosphere, we refer this as guided infrasound. We propose model propagation ground analytically; use 1D layered atmosphere three-layer solid subsurface medium. The synthetic movements fit observed well fitting indicates that regolith beneath InSight about 40-m thickness. also examine validate previously-published models derived from ambient vibration data.

Impact - generated seismic signals on Mars
Meteorite impacts will be a key seismic source for probing Mars’ interior during the InSight mission. Maximising data exploitation requires a good understanding of impact-generated seismic ground motions (waves), which has been limited by a lack of observational data and the practical difficulty of replicating relevant martian impact conditions in experiments. The aim of this PhD project is to ...
متن کاملInfrasound events detected with the Southern California Seismic Network
[1] We examine continuous data from the Southern California Seismic Network from 2003 and identify infrasound acoustic waves from 76 previously undetected events. Using waveform cross-correlation of the signal envelope functions, we determine their relative arrival times and estimate source locations. The waves travel at acoustic speeds of 320 m/s and are observed in seismic records up to 450 k...
